Clay Tobacco Pipes from the 17th and 18th Centuries at the Almada-Carvalhais Palace (Lisbon)

This study presents the ceramic tobacco pipes from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries identified at the Almada-Carvalhais Palace in Lisbon. The assemblage comprises 42 fragments and distinguishes locally produced red-clay pipes from imported examples, especially British and Dutch wares.

The material documents the circulation of objects connected with tobacco consumption and helps identify different production, distribution, and use networks in the urban context of Lisbon. The archaeological reading considers forms, fabrics, finishes, and makers’ marks.
