The article studies 447 pipe fragments recovered from a 28 m² archaeological survey on Rua do Terreiro do Trigo in Alfama, associated with seventeenth- and eighteenth-century contexts and deposits linked to the 1755 earthquake. It distinguishes white kaolin pipes, mainly English and Dutch, from grey or black earthenware chibouks, discussing makers’ marks, chronology, trade networks, and the multicultural character of tobacco consumption in Lisbon.
