Ceramic Tobacco Pipes from the Marialva Palace

Marco Calado, João Pimenta, Lidia María Marques Fernandes, and António Marques de Faria study the ceramic tobacco pipes recovered at the Marialva Palace. The assemblage includes 703 fragments of imported kaolin pipes and 19 fragments made from locally produced red clay.

The analysis identifies Dutch and English examples, including makers’ marks, and helps explain commercial circuits, consumption habits, and the presence of imported products in Lisbon. The article also shows the coexistence of imported pipe wares and local production.
