This monograph presents an ethnoarchaeological interpretation of tobacco and pipe use among Guarani peoples, with particular attention to the Mbyá. The author brings together archaeological, historical, and ethnographic sources to examine the material, social, and cosmological meanings of the petynguá.

The study follows the history of tobacco among Indigenous peoples of the Americas, examines archaeological pipe collections from Rio Grande do Sul, and brings together conversations and observations about petynguá use in Mbyá contexts. It connects the pipe and its smoke with embodiment, memory, ritual, and sociocosmology.
